Six mistakes hindering you from earning online with your academic writing skills

Why you are not making money online with academic writing

Academic writing is a lucrative adventure with millions of writers, tutors, bloggers, and facilitators earning from it yearly. In Kenya, university students are into this academic writing racking fortune from this Gold mine, some graduates who are yet to be employed are also into it with others even raising families using funds from this adventure. You must have heard of testimonials from various academic writers revealing how much they have made and you ask yourself why not you?

In this article, I will reveal some of the most common mistakes writers do when venturing into academic writing, how to avoid them, and how you can solve them if you have been so unlucky to have committed one.

Common mistakes academic writers commit that prevent them from earning

1. Choosing the wrong trainer– This is a common mistake most academic writers commit especially the newbies. When you choose the wrong trainer when beginning your academic writing career, it will be very difficult for you to pick up and you might end up giving up along the way before you begin making money. To avoid this mistake, thoroughly research the person you want to take as your trainer. Go through their social media platform and check if their posts are giving an image of an academic writer (Academic writers are always active on social media platforms because this is where most of them meet their clients). When going through their social media platforms, check for the following;

• Profile picture- They should be using their real image as the profile picture

• Name- The name should be original and not a pseudo

• Posts- Most if not all of their posts should be related with academic writing

• Comments- Most of the comments below their posts should be positive

2. Failing to complete your training– Most people are not patient enough to wait until the training is complete before venturing into the world of academic writing officially. Some trainees especially University students and graduates feel like they are familiar with academic writing skills because they have interacted with them in their university education. They end up going to the field half-baked, failing terribly, and then coming back to cry for the trainer to help them get clients. Some of these concepts are different from the ones we learn in school, you should therefore be patient till the end of training. In the deal you strike with your trainer, remember to include mentorship program where you will be taught how to navigate the market looking for employees, creating and managing account, and being employed by your trainer.

3. Laptops/Desktop– Well you can make a step in academic writing using your smartphone but it is very difficult to make a real breakthrough and start earning real cash online through academic writing if you don’t have a laptop/desktop. This may be the reason why you have tried so hard to make a breakthrough but it is still not working out for you. Try as much as possible to acquire a laptop if you want to succeed in academic writing, if you can’t afford a laptop, then go for a desktop as it is much cheaper. You can even buy a second hand laptop, am sure can get a good laptop in very low price. To get a quality laptop at a throw away price, visit these shylock shops where people give electronics as collateral, there you will get a very good laptop at a very low price.

4. Qualification– You might not be qualified to venture into academic writing. To succeed in academic writing, you must have at least a year of tertiary education. If your qualification is below this, you’ll need a very good trainer to induct you into the online academic writing business. You can opt for other online jobs like surveys, tasks, and even article writing if your education is below this. But don’t give up on your quest for a good life because you can still make it if you are determined.

5. Wrong writing account– The other common mistake most people commit that prevents them from earning from online academic writing is choosing the wrong writing account. First of all purchasing or opening a writing account should come in the later parts of your writing career and not the first as most people think. Your first clients should come from your trainer/employer. After 6-12 months of employment, you should start looking for clients on your own through social media, Freelancer, Upwork, Fiverr, and other biding platforms. You should start looking for take accounts when you have at least 2 years of experience in this business. That’s when you are able to handle a writing account well without having your account locked because of errors. After owning your first account, you can go ahead to teach others and employ them to work for you, this means that you should have more than one account to ensure constant flow of work even in low seasons.

6. Failing to observe changes in this field– Academic writing keeps on changing and as a writer, you should be able to identify these changes and act appropriately. Like one of the changes I have witnessed since I started writing is that most clients are abandoning writing accounts and looking for writers in social media and other platforms instead. This may be because of the high price writing accounts charge for simple tasks. If you are a writer who is really looking to succeed in this field, you should activate your social media accounts and update your bio so that you can start looking for clients there. This is just one of the observations I have made after keenly assessing the market. Various platforms are also running out of clients. You should therefore not struggle to buy expensive accounts when you are not even guaranteed a constant flow of clients in the first place. Open a LinkedIn account, register on WeChat, create a blog, edit your Freelancer.com account and other biding accounts you have, and start looking for clients.
